June 6th will be a sad day for caravanners who favour the County Waterford area, as Power's Caravan Park in Ardmore will close its doors to motorhomes, the Irish Examiner reports.
After longstanding planning issues, owners Thomas and John Power have confirmed they are putting the park on the market after no longer being able to afford improvements.
Waterford council had previously ordered the pair to pay 141,000 euros for development of the water system in the area and despite intermediaries saying that this could be negotiated, the Powers said that following consultation with their legal team, accountants and engineers, it was decided that costs were still untenable.
In a letter to their 166 customers, the Powers wrote: "This decision has not been easy for us to make as our family have been involved in the tourism business in Ardmore for over 40 years. We hope that you can understand that we had no option in this situation."
Residents were so reluctant to leave their beloved site that they pointed out that raising their annual pitch fee of 1,200 euros might have helped the Caravan Park meet costs, but said this had never been requested.
Caravanners also said that given a bit more notice, they could have considered organising a buyout.
